The winner is truly the best club in Texas.

1997 BCA Tournament Report -- Honey Hole Magazine hosted its Bass Club Affiliation (BCA) annual Top Six Championship at Lake Limestone on October 25-26, 1997. Affiliated clubs send their top six anglers to compete as three two-person teams. The BCA state championship attracted 486 contestants in 243 boats.

Anglers endured moderate south winds on Saturday and 20-30 mph north winds on Sunday as a cold front blew through. Two-man teams were limited to five fish per day. Over two days, 396 bass were weighed in and almost all were released alive back into the lake. Honey Hole stresses catch-and-release and provides contestants with a treatment used in boats' live wells to improve catch survival until weigh-in.

The best anglers from eighty-one bass clubs competed in this championship tournament. The Bryan Bass Club top-six represented the club well, finishing in 5th place with 23.97 pounds. Team members included Sam Fling, Bobby Barnes, Clyde Wilkerson, Jerry McDowell, Ray Rippstein, and David Crowson (replacing Pat Baker). Sam Fling caught fish both days including a five-fish limit on Sunday to lead his club to an impressive finish. Sam fished crankbaits around scattered trees in open water to develop his winning pattern.
